Mercury Retrograde Begins: 3/23 the first Mercury retrograde of 2018
I really couldn't put it any better. So I'm quoting another to describe whats up for this first Mercury retrograde of 2018.
Quoting Roya Baclund on EliteDaily.com, "On Thursday, March 22, the first Mercury retrograde of 2018 will officially be underway. When this major astrological event occurs while Mercury is in a fire sign as brash and volatile as Aries, none of us are safe. Be prepared for miscommunications on the daily, technological breakdowns at the worst possible time, maddeningly awful traffic, and perhaps even a spontaneous visit from your ex. All of these are just the tip of the iceberg for what can go wrong while Mercury appears to be rolling backwards in the sky. For the next three weeks, you might as well just sit back, relax, and watch this sh*t show go down. I'm telling you: This is going to be amazing(ly terrifying)."
That's what we have in store. Unpredictable, radical, and transformative levels of change literally catapulting around us all day every day for about the next month. Hah. I love this sly little non highlighted fact. It's starting today the 23rd of March and going all the way until April 15th! Heck, I thought I wanted to quit my day job when Mercury was shadowing and preparing to retrograde. I can only imagine the bumpy ride ahead.
Now Mercury doesn't really moved backward, it just appears to move backward.
Mercury's orbit is different than earth. Roughly 3-4 times a year,Mercury speeds past Earth, and that is when we experience a Mercury retrograde period. As Mercury "speeds by, it is like a train flying past, creating a powerful, turbulent gust of “wind” in its wake. The turbulence and disruption Mercury creates when it retrogrades can affect what we feel on Earth in our everyday lives. In astrology, we always believe the following rule is true: 'As above, so too below.' By that we mean, there is a fractal relationship between the orbits in the heavens and human activity down here on Earth." (astrologyzone.com). So Mercury retrograde affects us all the same with this massive gust of transformational energy, and yet we are each effected in our own individual ways. This is especially based on our astrological signs. Which I find pretty interesting. That our birth is truly the moment of impact for us here on earth astronomically.
Seriously, I don't even want to try to break it down in my own words as I know Mercury will really just make me expand the thought too much and have none of this make sense.
Susan Miller on Astrologyzone.com tells it as it is: "Mercury rules all types of communication, including listening, speaking, learning, reading, editing, researching, negotiating, selling, and buying. Mercury also rules all formal contracts and agreements, as well as important documents such as book manuscripts or term papers, agreements, deeds, contracts, leases, wills, and so forth.
Included under this planet’s domain are all types of code, including computer codes, as well as transportation, shipping, and travel. When this planet retrogrades, these areas tend to get scrambled or spin out of control.
Why does this happen? When a planet retrogrades, astrologically it is in a resting or sleeping state. Therefore, while Mercury naps, the activities that it governs don’t have the benefit of a well-functioning, wide-awake planet to supervise them. Expect a certain degree of pandemonium to ensue!"
Personally, I'm working on a Sadhana. Which is Sanskrit for, a 40 day intentional practice to bring change. I'm in a coaching program with this fabulous woman named Suzanne Heyn. She has some seriously healing vocals and thoughts. It was a stretch for me financially for sure. But I believe in trusting my intuition. I believe in stepping forward with strength and releasing fear and self doubt is necessary to do that. So a midst my life responsibilities of girlfriend, family member, community member, dog mom, my two online acting workshops, my day job assisting in managing a high impacted yoga studio (teaching classes; managing, hiring & inspiring employees; coaching teachers in training; holding space for others; keeping up a practice what I preach & mindful presence), managing my acting career, and this business - I'm personally investing in a 40 day journey of change. Because why not? I am limitless and can handle anything. I've decided this year to work from a mantra to be unstoppable. Even when I fall and I fail, I get back up because I remember I have a greater purpose. I have a deeper reasoning and meaning for being here than I am allowing myself to live. And it's time to release from tight the bud held within fear, and instead expand out blossoming with love into the world who I am. And all I want to be. Thoughts create your reality my friends, meditate during this time to see what's going on up there in your subconscious minds.
Mercury in retrograde is a time for grounding, and getting back in tune with your higher self. Spend some time experiencing what it's like to be in your heart center.
I encourage you to pick up a practice of Svahdyaya (Self-Study). Give yourself the space and time to get in tune with your higher self. Meditate on how your feeling at this point in your life and write your thoughts down after. Allow yourself to absorb whatever you need to absorb during this time. And acknowledge that your subconscious intelligence is much more powerful than you can imagine. You truly take in more than you know, which is great because your subconscious mind is always at work! By committing to a consistent practice of meditation or yoga, we gain more trust in our intuition and we affirm that we are committing to our dreams. To not allowing them to be just something we see from the inside, but something that can become our outer reality.
Get connected to nature in any way you can. This week I took my dog out for a walk, I only took my house keys. Left my smart watch and phone behind, as a way to distance myself from Mercury's grip on my life's experience. I only intended to walk our usual 10, sometimes 20 minute route. I wore layers because even though the temperatures were up, it's still winter and I don't want a cold! Plus, Mercury is my health planet so with it out of commission I really didn't want to catch anything by being unprepared for the weather. As I was out on my walk, I decided on a whim to take my pup on a longer loop down by the lake. It’s only a ten minute walk down, somedays a little less. But the wind can really cut deep and theres a drastic change in how warm you feel even in the sun. Alas we ventured out. She needed space and a little time to run after a weekend of not feeling well. Spoiled pup always gets her favorite meal of chicken and rice when she gets sick. Ah we love her though, so she's worth the effort. On our walk she was able to go off leash and run, sprint, roam across the field. I made myself for just a quick moment take off my boots and step onto the grass with my feet. It was damp so I felt the earth fast under my feet and hopped back into my boots. But his one moment of earthly connection was so delightful after an icy and wicked winter. The opportunity to feel something other than man made underneath me was such a treat. I definitely needed the nature moment. But was glad I wore warm boots so it didn't bother me after to have damp socks. I almost went for a handstand, but then remembered how mushy the soil before felt and opted out. We continued around the back of the park, and made are way back home.
We did a giant balloon shape of a walk, complete with a string so we walked the same street down and back. It took us almost an hour in total, the Sunshine and joy that my pup received was delightful to experience. As well as the detached from real time or any cellular connection. I crave this often. Which is why it's hard to even catch me on my phone. I'm an in person kind of gal. It's probably the performer in me. It takes change to make change. So here I am investing in myself, in sharing my inner reality in order to create a more attuned and aligned with my highest self outer reality. I'm tired of living in the shadows, hidden away in the darkness. I've done it to myself. There are few others to blame. really more on me again though and my ability to self thought process in a better way for what is true for me might be different than what is true for others. We forget this often as humans. Especially when we preach we are one, we are, but we are different even in that we are the same. Mercury retrograde sort of reminds us of this individuality, as we all experience emotions and communication in different ways especially in this era.
Susan explains, "When Mercury retrogrades, think of it as an instant signal that the wind is changing direction. Something is in flux up on the road ahead, but the problem is, everything looks the same and unchanging. What makes these periods so difficult is that you cannot see yet that they are about to change, often radically" (astrologyzone.com). DO NOT FEAR - there are exceptions to the rule! Susan declares: "Indeed, despite what I have just said, there are situations where you can move forward, gingerly, during Mercury retrograde. The main time you can is if you are going back to the past, either to correct something or do more with a person you know and admire" (astrologyzone.com).
Just to put you in a good mood, here's one last reading on things and steps you can take on your journey during this time of Mercury retrograde. I've got a long post today because I always get a lot of questions when I bring up Mercury retrograde. So despite hearing what I have to say, I really want you to feel deeply informed yourself. Who better than someone who's studied it longer than I, to explain in detail the process for you during a time when communication is not our strongest skill! I'll write us out after you read this and offer a few journal prompts and words from my program for inviting inspirational and transformative thought.
Susan Miller writes, "Although these Mercury retrograde periods can be frustrating, they are often useful too, for they allow us to reassess, revisit, readdress, redo, and redesign our plans. Sometimes we rush along in life without fully considering our basic assumptions or actions. Mercury retrograde allows us to stop, look, listen, and redirect our energies more productively. Mercury also helps us find closure to certain situations.
Reconnecting with old pals and relatives is very common during retrograde periods, and that can be one of the most positive and fun sides of this planet’s retrograde orbit. If you hear from an old friend or colleague during Mercury retrograde, I feel there is a potent reason for it. It seems to me that there is something that the two of you are meant to do or plan together.
We can all benefit from taking a closer look at situations with greater depth, which happens when Mercury retrogrades. Mercury retrograde periods are like walking through glue, so they do tend to make us slow down, which at times can be a blessing.
Here are some examples of ways Mercury retrograde can help you:
- Perhaps you have been working on a project that seems to have gone down the wrong path. When Mercury retrogrades, it could become evident that the project needs to be altered slightly or redirected. Even if you did not get your way originally, if you argue your case persuasively, things might go your way now.
- You stall on accepting a job offer, and lo and behold, a better one comes your way in the meantime.
- You refrain from buying a certain big-ticket item, and within a few weeks, the coveted item goes on sale and you will be glad you waited.
- If a meeting is postponed or cancelled, you have more time to gather additional information that probably will come in quite handy.
- If you are in sales, go back to old customers and clients. You may do better by asking for more business from people who have always trusted you than by trying to extend your reach into new sales territory. Former customers like being contacted, and under Mercury retrograde, you will have the time to do so.
- Missing objects are likely to be found. That beautiful bracelet wasn’t lost after all – it was on your bookshelf, behind your favorite book!
Don’t assume everything goes wrong during Mercury retrograde – sometimes things work in your favor. If you are self-employed and turned down an assignment because the price the client was willing to pay was too low, this same client may come back after the retrograde (after he sees many others turning down his offer) – and you get the project after all, at the right price. People reconsider their stance when Mercury is retrograde, and in some cases, conditions turn out to be more favorable to you than they might have been before” (astrologyzone.com).
As we have now all learned, Mercury retrograde is not all bad! What a relief to study deeper the impactful changes the circle and encompass our world. I have only once done a tarot card reading. And was so nervous going in, but the woman advised me. But wouldn't it be so much better to know what you can? This was soothing to my heart and soul at the time. And I was able to accept the questions that arose and asked with childlike curiosity the ones I felt comfortable with. Mercury retrograde offers us a time of rebirth and stirring up the pot. Ask for time and space for yourself from yourself and from others. Create boundaries so that when the problem arises you can handle more tasks with ease. Especially the little ones. Take this time to focus on the things you want to "re" and then get moving on them! Catapult their change into this world and allow the winds of change to receive them.
We live in an ask and receive universe. We don't always see it or realize we've asked for it but responsibilities and life experiences come. And we can't run from all of them, not even the ones you can run from can you run for long. So rather than live in fear and scarcity, come back to abundance. Come back to meditation or whatever serves you in finding more patience. I've been practicing a daily meditation between 5-20 minutes since last Saturday -and what an experience this first week has been so far! Since everything is a little hectic with Mercury dropping into retrograde today, I am thankful for the focus on self healing in my Sadhana course.
From the journaling this week we were prompted, and the spring cleaning asked of us (perfect for Mercury retrograde), I'm feeling much more rooted in my lower Chakras. I am much more assure of myself and my words as well but definitely more balanced in my lower body. I feel that's the best way to describe it, cleansed through where I carry my heaviness or tightness - these past two years I've felt really imbalanced in my lower Chakras. My mid back is holding WAY less tension. My solar plexus is feeling very present and ready to shine forward. And my hips while sitting on the ground are feeling really loose rather than holding tension like usual. I'm experiencing a pretty radical energetic shift from where I've been at in the past four to five months. It's a little overwhelming, I felt almost sick twice this week. Though I did throw in a Reike healing session on Monday night too, which produced this endless energetic force of fire and wind change within me. So quick and radical and sharp. Luckily this feels pretty accurate because my two doshas are Vata catabolic (meaning in my personality) and Pitta metabolic (the fire makes it fast) . So I fuel on ether and air, as well as fire and water energetically.
I guess most of all I'm discovering so many places where a block has been placed, and not always placed by me. Coming into today's journals, I found I've been letting other adults opinions control my life ever since I was little. Even if I pushed myself, on the outside, to route myself on the course I felt was meant for me, there was a little part still listening to the fear and the bitterness that I am not enough for what I ask of in my dreams. But I'm coming to find that I am enough; I am so enough. You are too. Allow yourself to sit within the raw magnitude of the power and being that is you, and commit to be persistent with your dreams. Despite what the tides of energy bring.
In case you're craving inspiration: I offer you these journal prompts:
- What things to I hold onto or resist welcoming into my life?
- How does creating space make me feel?
- What fears or thoughts do I have around releasing my past or creating a beautiful future?
- Is it true? Do you know it's true? How do you feel in your body when you feel or think either past or future?
- Everything that that brings up, am I willing to destroy, uncreate, and let go? So be it. So BE it.
Be the change, morph with it and play with it. Challenge it. Be in the present and choose shape your outer reality. Go out and eat, sleep, breathe change for a whole three weeks. Throw your life vest on, and practice unconditional self love as a full time job through this Mercury retrograde. Find new ways to create space within you and in your life.
